my story
I have always loved piano and was fortunate to have had two wonderful piano teachers who fostered a love of music and greatly influenced my life as a musician and teacher.
A late beginner, I began formal piano lessons as a teenager with the pianist and composer, Phyllis Batchelor. Having had little exposure to classical music, it was in her lessons that I first heard a live concert pianist. Coupled with her great sense of humour and down-to-earth approach to music making she demystified the classical world, and to a kid from the country, was a truly inspirational guide.
After studying with Phyl for several years, I decided to explore other worlds and after a stint working in the corporate sector, resumed piano lessons with Dr Anne Lierse. Anne is a gifted teacher who excels at bringing out the best in all her students. With Anne I learned new ways of studying repertoire, developing technique and how to approach each student as a unique individual. Anne believes with the right training, anyone can learn to play piano well and her sound pedagogical ideas have formed the bedrock of my teaching.
teaching philosophy
I am passionate about great music education and firmly believe that learning to play piano well is possible for everyone. Using contemporary ideas in piano pedagogy, I aim to create a studio environment where students learn the necessary skills to express themselves as pianists. Every student is unique and has something special to bring to their own education. It is my role to respect their differences and help every student realise their full potential.
